Best Oud Perfumes in Oman
Article Summary: The best oud perfumes in Oman are not Omani oud, because there is no such thing: the Aquilaria tree that oud comes from is native to South and Southeast Asia, every oud in the Sultanate is imported and luban is the scent that belongs to this land. What "oud perfume" means in Muscat today is Western oud, agarwood over a synthetic base with rose or saffron on top, and the ten below are MOJ's readings of ten of them, from Dior's Oud Ispahan to Amouage's Silver Oud, all available in all three sizes from OMR 2.500.
- Oud Ispahan (2012) is by Francois Demachy; Ombre Nomade (2018) and Pur Oud (2021) by Jacques Cavallier Belletrud; Opus XIII Silver Oud (2021) is credited by Amouage to Cecile Zarokian; Santal Royal (2014) is by Thierry Wasser; Halfeti (2015) by Christian Provenzano.
- Gucci Oud (2014) is credited to Ilias Ermenidis; Epic Man (2009) and Oud For Greatness (2018) have no perfumer named by their houses; Dior's Oud Rosewood launch year rests on one source.
- Resin forms in the Aquilaria tree only as a stress response and in about seven to ten percent of trees; all Aquilaria species have sat in CITES Appendix II since 2005, which means regulated trade, not a ban.
- Louis Vuitton's Pur Oud is Assam oud at ten percent, AED 7,800 for 100 ml in the UAE and not sold in Oman at all; MOJ's version is OMR 4.300.
- MOJ's ten run from OMR 2.500 for 30 ml of Royal Santal to OMR 5.500 for Silver Oud, all available in all three sizes.

Oud in Oman is imported, not local
This is worth saying plainly before any list. The Aquilaria tree, from which oud is taken, is native to South and Southeast Asia: India, the Philippines, Malaysia, southern China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. It does not grow in the Arabian Peninsula. Every oud in Oman is imported; Dhofari luban is the scent that belongs to this land and oud is its adopted one. Our guide to Omani luban covers what Oman actually owns.
Oud is expensive because the resin forms in the tree only as a response to stress, a fungal infection, an insect bore or a wound, and only in about seven to ten percent of trees. All Aquilaria species have been listed in Appendix II of CITES since 2005, and Appendix II means regulated trade under permit, not a ban, so it is wrong to say oud is prohibited. What is called "oud perfume" in Muscat today is mostly Western oud: a small amount of agarwood or an accord that imitates it over a synthetic base, with rose, saffron or frankincense on top. That is what the ten below read, and it is what Oman searches for in Arabic more than any other scent, about 1,600 searches a month for the word oud alone.
How we chose the ten
Two conditions. The original has a perfumer or a launch year that two sources can confirm, and the MOJ version is available today in all three sizes. We deliberately left out our readings of Gulf houses that sell inspired fragrances themselves, because comparing a version with a version tells the reader nothing. The ten cover oud in its kinds, rose, resinous, pure, sweet and leathery, from four houses rather than one. The oud perfumes collection holds forty-two fragrances; this page is the short version.
The ten, with the MOJ versions
1. Oud Isphahan A: the rose oud
The best known thing in Dior's private collection across the whole Gulf. Oud Ispahan launched in 2012 by Francois Demachy, and Dior describes it as oud wood smoke embellished with red Damascena rose, on labdanum, Indonesian patchouli, Laotian oud and sandalwood. It is the fragrance that understood Gulf oud wants rose rather than sugar. MOJ's reading follows that build with saffron, leather and papyrus added, in all three sizes from OMR 3.800. The best Dior perfumes guide covers the house.
Top: Rose, Saffron, Bergamot
Heart: Rose, Labdanum, Patchouli
Base: Oud, Sandalwood, Papyrus, Leather
2. Rose Oudwood: the Turkish rose and oud
The newer sibling. Oud Rosewood is from the same private collection, and its launch year, 2020, rests on one source, so it sits in the table with that caveat. Dior describes it today in terms that differ from its launch description, which is what we say rather than that it was reformulated. It is softer than Oud Ispahan and less smoky, Turkish rose and geranium over oud and sandalwood, the one to choose if Oud Ispahan is more than you can carry. MOJ's Rose Oudwood follows that build, in all three sizes from OMR 3.800.
Top: Bergamot, Saffron, Pink Pepper
Heart: Turkish Rose, Geranium, Jasmine
Base: Oud, Sandalwood, Amber, Musk
3. Ombre Nomade A: the resinous oud
The fragrance that made Louis Vuitton serious in this part of the world. Ombre Nomade launched in 2018 by Jacques Cavallier Belletrud, the house's perfumer since 2012, and the house's own page names oud, benzoin, incense and raspberry, the last of which is the surprise that keeps it from being just another Western oud. There is no Louis Vuitton store in Oman and the house does not ship to the Sultanate, so the MOJ version is the available route. MOJ's Ombre Nomade A follows the build, raspberry, saffron and birch, then oud, rose, geranium and incense, then benzoin, agarwood and amber, in all three sizes from OMR 3.800. The best Louis Vuitton perfumes guide explains why there is no store here.
Top: Raspberry, Saffron, Birch
Heart: Oud, Rose, Geranium, Incense
Base: Benzoin, Agarwood, Amber, Woody Notes
4. Pur Oud: the pure oud
The most expensive fragrance on this list by a margin that is not close. Pur Oud, from 2021 and also by Cavallier Belletrud, is Assam oud at ten percent against very little else, and the house sells it in the UAE at AED 7,800 for 100 ml, about OMR 820, and does not sell it in Oman at all. It is the Western fragrance closest to raw oud. MOJ's Pur Oud reads it as saffron, cypress and bergamot, then oud, rose, patchouli and incense, then sandalwood, leather, amber and musk, in all three sizes from OMR 4.300, about a sixtieth of the original's price per millilitre.
Top: Saffron, Cypress, Bergamot
Heart: Oud, Rose, Patchouli, Incense
Base: Sandalwood, Leather, Amber, Musk
5. Silver Oud: the adopted Omani oud
The oud from the house founded in Muscat. Opus XIII Silver Oud is from Amouage's Library Collection, launched in 2021, credited by the house to Cecile Zarokian with a concept drawn from Stendhal. It is a silver oud rather than a black one: bergamot and saffron over rose, patchouli and incense on agarwood, sandalwood and white musk, cleaner than everything above it on this list. It is the dearest MOJ version here at OMR 5.500 for 30 ml. The best Amouage perfumes guide covers the whole house.
Top: Bergamot, Saffron, Pink Pepper
Heart: Rose, Patchouli, Incense
Base: Agarwood, Sandalwood, Amber, White Musk
6. Epic M: the Silk Road
The classic. Epic Man launched in 2009 from Amouage, which names no perfumer for it and says it was inspired by the Silk Road: pink pepper and nutmeg over rose, cinnamon and incense on agarwood, myrrh and patchouli. It is the oud every Omani knows from the majlis, spice and incense before the oud arrives. MOJ's Epic M follows that build, for men, in all three sizes from OMR 3.800.
Top: Pink Pepper, Nutmeg, Geranium
Heart: Rose, Cinnamon, Incense
Base: Agarwood, Sandalwood, Myrrh, Patchouli
7. G Oud: the fruity oud
The one that is no longer sold. Gucci Oud launched in 2014 at the end of Frida Giannini's years, credited to Ilias Ermenidis, pear, raspberry and saffron over oud and rose on amber and leather, then dropped from Gulf shelves as the creative director changed. So the MOJ version is not the cheaper route but the available one. It is the sweetest oud on the list and the easiest for anyone wearing oud for the first time. MOJ's G Oud is in all three sizes from OMR 3.200.
Top: Pear, Raspberry, Saffron, Orange
Heart: Oud, Rose, Patchouli
Base: Amber, Leather, Incense, Sandalwood
8. Royal Santal: the sandalwood that behaves like oud
The cheapest on the list. Santal Royal launched in 2014 by Thierry Wasser, Guerlain's master perfumer, with distribution aimed at the Middle East first, and was reissued in 2024 in the Absolus Allegoria line. Guerlain describes it as a rich wood: sandalwood at the centre with Bulgarian rose, jasmine, amber, leather and oud accords. The sandalwood in it behaves like oud in heat, creamy and dense rather than dry. MOJ's Royal Santal reads it as bergamot, violet and pink pepper, then rose, oud and jasmine, then sandalwood, amber, leather and vanilla, in all three sizes from OMR 2.500.
Top: Bergamot, Violet, Pink Pepper
Heart: Rose, Oud, Jasmine
Base: Sandalwood, Amber, Leather, Vanilla
9. Halfeti SH: the black rose and oud
The British one. Halfeti launched in 2015 in Penhaligon's Trade Routes collection, by Christian Provenzano, named for a Turkish town on the Euphrates drowned by a dam reservoir and known for a rose so dark it gets called black. The house says "oud accord" rather than oud, and we repeat that. It has the most citrus opening on the list, grapefruit, bergamot and cardamom before the rose and saffron arrive, then oud, leather and amber. MOJ's Halfeti SH follows that build, in all three sizes from OMR 4.300.
Top: Grapefruit, Bergamot, Cardamom, Lavender
Heart: Rose, Jasmine, Saffron, Cypress
Base: Oud, Leather, Amber, Sandalwood, Tonka
10. Oud For Greatness: the modern oud
Oud for people who do not like oud. Oud For Greatness launched in 2018 from Initio Parfums Prives, the Paris house in the same group that owns Parfums de Marly, as part of its Black Gold Project, and the house names no perfumer. It is an eau de parfum, not an extrait: saffron, nutmeg and lavender over oud, patchouli and rose on musk, oakmoss and amber, and the lavender is what makes it read modern rather than traditional. MOJ's Oud For Greatness follows that build, in all three sizes from OMR 4.300.
Top: Saffron, Nutmeg, Lavender
Heart: Oud, Patchouli, Rose
Base: Musk, Oakmoss, Amber, Sandalwood
What the MOJ versions cost
Between OMR 2.500 and 5.500 for 30 ml. Royal Santal is the cheapest at OMR 2.500, G Oud 3.200, six sit between 3.800 and 4.300, and Silver Oud alone is 5.500. All ten are in the oud perfumes collection, and the originals are in the brand guides linked above where prices in rials exist; most Western houses do not sell in Oman, and Dior alone has a boutique at Mall of Oman. Pur Oud is the example of the gap: AED 7,800 in the UAE and no official route to it from Muscat.
How to choose between them
By the kind of oud you want. If you want the rose oud the Gulf actually wears, Oud Isphahan A, or Rose Oudwood if you want it softer. If you want resin and smoke, Ombre Nomade A. If you want oud as close to raw as it gets, Pur Oud. If you want a clean oud for the day, Silver Oud. If you want the traditional majlis oud, Epic M. If you are wearing oud for the first time, G Oud or Royal Santal, the sweetest and the cheapest. If you want an oud that does not smell like oud, Halfeti SH or Oud For Greatness. All of them are November to March scents in Muscat, two sprays before the cool months and four after, except Silver Oud, which survives April. The 30 ml first, always, with oud; it is a commitment. These are rules from character, not longevity figures in hours.
