Dior Sauvage: Worth It?

Article Summary: Dior Sauvage is a 2015 eau de toilette by Francois Demachy, Dior's in-house perfumer from 2006 to 2021: Calabrian bergamot and Sichuan pepper over a large dose of ambroxan, the clean, salty, woody molecule that gives it its trail. Dior lists only those three notes; the fuller pyramid that reviewers print, with lavender, geranium, elemi, patchouli and vetiver, is the enthusiasts' reconstruction, and MOJ's reading follows that longer list. Dior, owned by LVMH, has called Sauvage the best-selling fragrance in the world every year since 2022, and LVMH's July 2025 shareholder letter repeated it; no independent sales figure has ever been published, so we print it as the brand's claim. Johnny Depp has been its face since 2015, through a withdrawn 2019 advert and a 2022 trial, on a 2023 contract reported at more than 20 million dollars. The line now has six fragrances, from the 2015 eau de toilette to the 2026 Extrait by Francis Kurkdjian. In Oman the six spellings we track add up to about 1,500 searches a month, Dior Beauty has a boutique in Mall of Oman, and Al Hajis listed the 100 ml at OMR 46.000 on sale. MOJ's reading, Sauvage 1.0, is OMR 3.800, 4.800 and 8.600, every size available on October 30, 2026.

  • Sauvage is not Eau Sauvage: the 1966 fragrance by Edmond Roudnitska shares the name and nothing else, and Dior still sells both.
  • Dior's "one bottle every three seconds" line from 2021 was contradicted by a 2025 trade report of one every thirty seconds and about twelve million bottles a year; we print the conflict.
  • Sauvage won the US Fragrance Foundation's Men's Fragrance of the Year in June 2016, the one award in its history that is not a brand claim.
  • It is the best-behaved designer fragrance in Omani heat, which is the real reason it owns the market here; the ambroxan does not turn in the sun.

What Sauvage is

Sauvage is an eau de toilette launched in 2015 in a heavy bottle of gradient blue glass with a magnetic cap, Dior's first new men's fragrance since 2008, and it was composed by Francois Demachy, the house's perfumer-creator from 2006 until his retirement in 2021. Dior's own note list is unusually short: bergamot from Reggio di Calabria and ambroxan on the main product page, with Sichuan pepper added on the line's other pages, and the brand's words are an act of creation inspired by wide-open spaces, born in nature, shaped by Dior. The longer pyramid most people know, with pink pepper, Provencal lavender, elemi, geranium, patchouli and vetiver around those three, is the enthusiast databases' reconstruction, not the brand's, and we label it as such. What matters is the ambroxan: a synthetic that smells of warm skin, salt and driftwood, used here in a quantity no designer house had risked before, so that the bergamot burns off in minutes and what remains is a clean mineral hum that people recognise across a room. It is sold in 30, 60, 100 and 200 ml refillable bottles, with a 300 ml refill, a 30 ml travel spray and an unbreakable air-powered version called the Very Cool Spray. One clarification Dior does not make for you: Eau Sauvage, the 1966 citrus by Edmond Roudnitska that was Dior's first men's fragrance, is a different perfume in every way except the word, and both are on the counter.

Who makes it, and who sells it

Parfums Christian Dior belongs to LVMH, which also bought the Christian Dior fashion house outright in 2017 for about 13 billion dollars, so the fragrance and the couture have sat under one owner since. Demachy wrote the eau de toilette, the 2018 eau de parfum, the 2019 parfum and the 2021 Elixir; when he retired, Dior announced on October 8, 2021, that Francis Kurkdjian, founder of Maison Francis Kurkdjian, would become its perfume creation director, and Kurkdjian has since written the two newest Sauvages. The commercial claim is the part to read carefully. Dior told the trade press in 2022 that Sauvage was the best-selling fragrance in the world across men's and women's, ahead of Coco Mademoiselle and La Vie Est Belle; LVMH's 2022 annual report called it the world leader again, and the group's July 2025 letter to shareholders called it the number one fragrance sold in the world. One report of LVMH's January 2026 results narrowed that to best-selling men's fragrance, a conflict we leave open. LVMH publishes no unit or revenue figure for Sauvage, and the only independent number we have is Circana's August 2026 ranking of it as the top men's fragrance franchise in the United States. Bernard Arnault himself said in January 2023 that Sauvage led perfume sales and that the Johnny Depp image was working very well, which is the clearest statement of why Dior kept him. In Oman the fragrance is sold at Dior Beauty's own boutique on level two of Mall of Oman and through the department stores; the two Dior addresses at the Royal Opera Galleria in Al Qurum are fashion. Our Dior guide covers the rest of the house.

The Johnny Depp years

Depp has fronted Sauvage since launch, when Dior called him an icon of contemporary virility, and the relationship has survived two things that would have ended most. In August 2019 Dior released a sixty-second film called We Are the Land, with Depp in the American desert, a Native American dancer and consultants from Americans for Indian Opportunity, and deleted it within hours after criticism from Indigenous groups of an advert for a perfume named Sauvage built on their imagery. In June 2022 a Virginia jury awarded Depp 10 million dollars in compensatory and 5 million in punitive damages against Amber Heard, and 2 million to Heard on her counterclaim, in a defamation case settled that December; Dior ran no campaign during the trial, posted in September 2022 that Depp was more than ever the soul of Sauvage, and in May 2023 Variety reported a new three-year contract worth more than 20 million dollars, the largest men's fragrance deal on record, which Dior declined to comment on. A new film followed in September 2023, the Sauvage Elixir campaign had already put him with a guitar in 2021, and a London pop-up called Fort Sauvage opened in September 2025 with a new Jean-Baptiste Mondino film, by one report. Kylian Mbappe and others have appeared for Dior since, but the bottle still belongs to Depp. We print the record, not a verdict on it.

The Sauvage line

Six fragrances in eleven years. Sauvage Eau de Toilette (2015), above. Sauvage Eau de Parfum (2018), Demachy again, which adds nutmeg, star anise and a Papua New Guinea vanilla and turns the mineral into something warmer, the one to buy for Omani winter evenings. Sauvage Parfum (2019), Demachy, sandalwood, tonka and vanilla under the bergamot, denser still. Sauvage Elixir (2021), Demachy's last, which Dior describes as extraordinarily concentrated and retailers variously label an eau de parfum, built on cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, lavender, liquorice and sandalwood, sold in 60 ml, the one the enthusiasts rank highest. Sauvage Eau Forte (2024), Kurkdjian's first, an alcohol-free parfum built on water that Dior says amplifies the freshness, in 60 and 100 ml. Sauvage Extrait (August 2026), Kurkdjian, an extrait de parfum led by oud in a 50 ml bottle, which he called a new pillar for the line. Around them sit the Very Cool Spray, the Spray for the Wild travel bottle, the gift-case limited editions and, at the top, a Baccarat crystal 350 ml at about 12,600 pounds. There is no Sauvage Absolu, Sauvage Intense or Sauvage Oud; listings under those names are not Dior. MOJ reads the 2015 eau de toilette and the Elixir.

What it costs in Oman

Dior does not sell online in Oman, so the price is whatever the shop prints. Al Hajis listed the 100 ml eau de toilette at OMR 46.000 on sale from 56.000 on October 30, 2026, and Centrepoint Oman at OMR 48.900 down from 67.900, so the walk-in price in Muscat sits between 46 and 68 rials depending on the week; Sephora Oman carries the eau de toilette, the parfum and the Elixir but its pages did not show us prices, and the Elixir 60 ml appeared at one Omani online shop at OMR 58.800 but unavailable. Across the border the picture is clearer: Bloomingdale's UAE has the eau de toilette at AED 595 for 100 ml, the eau de parfum at 1,030 for 200 ml and the parfum at 815 for 100 ml, Paris Gallery the Elixir at 689 for 60 ml, and Faces the Eau Forte at 580 for 60 ml and 815 for 100 ml. The Mall of Oman boutique is the place to smell all six in one visit. Our where-to-buy guide lists the authorised shops, and the best perfumes in Oman list shows where Sauvage sits against Aventus and the Arabic houses by search.

Why Oman wears it

Three reasons. The first is heat: ambroxan is the one modern material that behaves the same at 45 degrees as at 20, so Sauvage in July smells like Sauvage in January where a sweet or an oud turns heavy, which is why it is the default office fragrance from Muscat to Sohar. The second is search: the six spellings we track add up to about 1,500 searches a month in Oman, 590 for "dior sauvage", 260 for "عطر سوفاج", 210 each for "sauvage" and "سوفاج", 140 for "ديور سوفاج" and 90 for its price in Oman, which is the only designer men's term in this market with a real Arabic tail and more than Bleu de Chanel, Dior Homme Intense or Hugo Boss by our pulls, though still behind Aventus and far behind the Arabic houses. The third is the award: on June 7, 2016, the US Fragrance Foundation named Sauvage Men's Fragrance of the Year in the prestige category and gave it the men's media campaign and consumer choice awards too, and that is the one independent honour in a story otherwise told by Dior. What we do not print as fact is the bottle-every-three-seconds line, because the brand's own 2021 figure and a 2025 trade report of one every thirty seconds and about twelve million bottles a year cannot both be right. Our men's guide ranks it against the rest.

The MOJ reading

Our Sauvage 1.0 follows the long pyramid rather than Dior's three-name label: Calabrian bergamot, pepper and elemi on top, Sichuan pepper, lavender, pink pepper and geranium in the heart and ambroxan, cedarwood, labdanum and patchouli at the base, which is the enthusiasts' list with cedar and labdanum standing in for the vetiver. The bergamot-pepper opening and the ambroxan trail are the parts that matter and both are there; ours leans a little woodier in the base, and we say so. It is our own composition inspired by the original, in 30, 50 and 100 ml at OMR 3.800, 4.800 and 8.600, every size available on October 30, 2026, which puts the 100 ml at about a fifth of the Al Hajis sale price. Two sprays, any month, office or evening; it is the easiest bottle on our store to recommend to a man who does not want to think about perfume. It sits in our men's collection, and our Sauvage Elixir M, the reading of the 2021 Elixir, is OMR 4.300, 6.500 and 11.000 with every size available on the same date.

Should you buy the original or the reading

If you want the blue bottle, the magnetic cap and the fragrance everyone in the room already knows, buy the 100 ml eau de toilette at Al Hajis or Centrepoint when it is on sale, between OMR 46 and 49, and consider the eau de parfum instead if you wear it mostly after dark; it is a well-made fragrance at a fair designer price and nothing here says otherwise. If you want the bergamot-and-ambroxan effect for the car, the gym bag or a second bottle for the office drawer, the MOJ 30 ml at OMR 3.800 answers it, with the woodier base noted above. If you already own the original and want the next step, the Elixir is the one the enthusiasts chose and our Elixir M reads it at OMR 4.300. Stock changes, so the product page is the final word.
