Bleu de Chanel: Worth It?

Article Summary: Bleu de Chanel is a 2010 eau de toilette by Jacques Polge, Chanel's third in-house perfumer: citrus and an aromatic accord over cedar and New Caledonian sandalwood by Chanel's own short list, with grapefruit, mint, pink pepper, ginger, nutmeg, incense, vetiver and labdanum in the longer pyramid everyone else prints. It has grown into four strengths written by a father and a son: Jacques Polge's eau de toilette (2010) and eau de parfum (2014), and Olivier Polge's Parfum (2018) and L'Exclusif (2025), which Chanel named among the launches that drove its fragrance growth in a 19.3 billion dollar year. Martin Scorsese has directed two of its films, Gaspard Ulliel fronted it from 2010 until his death in 2022, Timothee Chalamet from 2023 and Jacob Elordi from April 2026. Chanel has one Fragrance and Beauty boutique in Oman, on level three of Mall of Oman, and publishes no Omani price online; in the UAE the eau de toilette starts at AED 425. In Oman "bleu de chanel" and its second spelling draw about 590 searches a month. MOJ's reading, De Blue, is OMR 3.200, 4.300 and 6.500, every size available on October 30, 2026.

  • Chanel makes every one of its perfumes in-house and has done since Parfums Chanel was founded in 1924; the Polges are the third and fourth noses in a hundred-year line that began with Ernest Beaux.
  • Bleu de Chanel Parfum won the US Fragrance Foundation's Men's Luxury Fragrance of the Year in 2019; the 2010 original took Best New Male Fragrance in 2011 by one account.
  • There is no Bleu de Chanel Intense, Elixir or Extreme; the four strengths and the grooming line are the whole family.
  • MOJ's reading follows the long pyramid almost note for note and leaves out the iso E super and white musk; it is a touch smokier than the original at the end, and we say so.

What Bleu de Chanel is

Bleu de Chanel is an eau de toilette launched in September 2010, composed by Jacques Polge, who had been the house's perfumer since 1978 and had already written Egoiste for its men in 1990. It is an aromatic woody: Chanel's own description names citrus notes, an aromatic accord, cedar and a New Caledonian sandalwood that gives what the brand calls a warm and sensual trail, and it describes the fragrance as an ode to masculine freedom in a bottle of deep and mysterious blue, which is the brand's language. The longer pyramid that Wikipedia and the retailers print, lemon, mint, pink pepper and grapefruit on top, ginger, iso E super, nutmeg and jasmine in the heart and labdanum, sandalwood, patchouli, vetiver, incense, cedar and white musk at the base, is not on any Chanel page and we label it as widely reported. What you smell is a sharp grapefruit-and-pepper opening that dries within the hour into a smoky, slightly sweet cedar that most people cannot name and almost everyone likes, which is the whole commercial point. It comes in 50, 100 and 150 ml, with a 20 ml refillable Twist and Spray trio and an after-shave, deodorant, shower gel and hair line behind it.

Who makes it: Chanel, by hand, in-house

Chanel is the odd one out among the big houses. It is privately owned by Alain and Gerard Wertheimer, grandsons of the Pierre Wertheimer who co-founded Parfums Chanel in 1924 with a seventy percent stake, and it has never licensed its perfumes to anyone: Chanel's own history lists Ernest Beaux, Henri Robert, Jacques Polge and, since 2015, Olivier Polge as the only four perfumers to have held the job in a century. The company reported revenue of 18.7 billion dollars for 2024, down four percent and 19.3 billion for 2025, with operating profit up five percent to 4.7 billion and growth led by fragrance and skincare; the growth rate was reported as two percent by one trade title and three by another, a small conflict we leave open. The same results named Bleu de Chanel L'Exclusif among the key launches of the year and counted more than twenty-five new Fragrance and Beauty boutiques, one of which is why this article can be written in Oman: Chanel's first Fragrance and Beauty boutique in the country, 136 square metres by one report, opened on level three of Mall of Oman in 2023 and sells the fragrances, Les Exclusifs, makeup, skincare and eyewear. In Dubai the equivalent boutiques are in Dubai Mall's Fashion Avenue and Dubai Hills Mall. Chanel sells fragrance online in many markets but not fashion, on a stated principle of not giving everything to everyone at once; it has no Oman web shop. Our Chanel guide covers the rest of the house.

The films and the faces

Bleu de Chanel is the fragrance that made perfume advertising hire film directors. The 2010 launch film was by Martin Scorsese, with Gaspard Ulliel as a man walking out of his own press conference to the Rolling Stones, saying he would no longer be the person he was expected to be; Ulliel was Chanel's first male ambassador and stayed the face through films by James Gray in 2015 and Steve McQueen in 2018, until his death on January 19, 2022, at 37, after a skiing collision. Chanel ran the 2022 campaign without a face. On May 15, 2023, it announced Timothee Chalamet, his first ambassadorship for any house, with stills by Mario Sorrenti and a second Scorsese film shot in New York that spring and released in May 2024; his fee was reported at about 35 million dollars by two magazines and never confirmed by Chanel, and we print it as reported. Chalamet fronted the L'Exclusif launch in August 2025, and on April 23, 2026, Chanel named Jacob Elordi as the 2026 face, with a film called The Chase by Alfonso Cuaron, set in Venice, for L'Exclusif, and a digital billboard campaign across the UAE in June 2026 by one trade report. Three faces, three auteur directors, sixteen years: no other men's fragrance has been marketed like a feature film for this long.

The Bleu de Chanel line

Four strengths, two perfumers, one family. Bleu de Chanel Eau de Toilette (2010, Jacques Polge), above. Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum (2014, Jacques Polge), Sicilian mandarin and lemon over cedar and Haitian vetiver on amber, vanilla, tonka and New Caledonian sandalwood, warmer and smoother, the one most Omani buyers end up with. Bleu de Chanel Parfum (unveiled May 29, 2018, Olivier Polge), denser again, with the sandalwood pushed forward, launched at 91 euros for 50 ml and the 2019 Fragrance Foundation winner. Bleu de Chanel L'Exclusif (August 2025, Olivier Polge), which Chanel says is designed like an extrait with leathery and ambery notes and calls the most mysterious of the Bleu interpretations, launched at 205 dollars for 60 ml and 275 for 100 ml, with a 160 ml added in 2026 and a coffret pairing it with a scented oil. Behind them sit the after-shave lotion, two deodorants, shower gel, a two-in-one cleanser, a three-in-one moisturiser, an all-over spray and the hair fragrance. There is no Bleu de Chanel Intense, Elixir, Extreme or Eau Fraiche; listings under those names are not Chanel. MOJ reads the 2010 eau de toilette.

What it costs in Oman

Here the honest answer is that nobody publishes one. Chanel has no Omani web shop, Sephora Oman's pages carry the fragrance without prices, Centrepoint Oman's listing for the eau de parfum shows a placeholder figure that is not a price, and Al Hajis, Jazp and Noon had no indexed Bleu listings when we checked, so the price in Oman is the price on the Mall of Oman counter on the day. The nearest published figures are Chanel's own UAE site, where the eau de toilette starts at AED 425, the eau de parfum at 480, the Parfum at 580 and L'Exclusif at 835 for the smallest size, and Faces, which lists the eau de toilette at AED 425, 595 and 715 for 50, 100 and 150 ml but had none to sell on October 30, 2026; AED 595 is about OMR 62 at the day's rate. Chanel's Saudi site has the eau de toilette from SAR 479 and its Kuwait site from KWD 36, about OMR 45, which brackets what the Muscat counter will ask. Our where-to-buy guide lists the authorised shops.

Why Oman wears it

Three reasons. The first is that it offends nobody: Bleu is the fragrance a man buys when he does not want to be asked about his fragrance, and in an Omani office, where sweet ouds and loud ambers are the norm after dark, a dry cedar that stays at arm's length is the safe daytime choice. The second is the numbers, modest but steady: "bleu de chanel" and its second spelling draw about 590 searches a month in Oman by our pull, a third of Sauvage's six spellings and a third of Aventus, but Chanel's name alone carries a premium that neither of those does, and the Mall of Oman boutique is less than three years old. The third is the record: the 2019 Fragrance Foundation win for the Parfum, the 2011 Best New Male Fragrance award by one account, a place in the US prestige top ten by a 2024 trade report, and historic NPD rankings of second-best-selling men's fragrance in America in 2011 and 2012 by one source. What we do not print is any claim that it outsells Sauvage; the 2024 and 2026 US rankings we have put Sauvage first and do not place Bleu above it. Our men's guide ranks it against the rest, and our Sauvage article is the comparison most buyers are really making.

The MOJ reading

Our De Blue follows the long pyramid rather than Chanel's four-name description: grapefruit, lemon, mint and pink pepper on top, ginger, nutmeg and jasmine in the heart and incense, vetiver, cedarwood, sandalwood and labdanum at the base. Set against the widely reported list, ours leaves out the iso E super, the patchouli and the white musk, which means the end of our version leans a little more on the incense and labdanum and reads smokier than the original's clean cedar; the grapefruit-pepper opening and the ginger-nutmeg middle are the same names. If the quiet, musky finish of Bleu is what you love, note that; if the opening is, you will find it. It is our own composition inspired by the original, in 30, 50 and 100 ml at OMR 3.200, 4.300 and 6.500, every size available on October 30, 2026, which puts the 100 ml at about a tenth of what the UAE charges for the original. Two sprays, spring and winter first, and it holds in warm weather better than most woody fragrances because the opening is citrus. It sits in our men's collection.

Should you buy the original or the reading

If you want the square blue bottle, the name and the cleanest cedar on the counter, go to the Mall of Oman boutique, ask the price that day and buy the eau de parfum rather than the eau de toilette if you wear it after six; it is a fairly priced designer fragrance from a house that has never cut a corner on its perfumes, and nothing here says otherwise. If you want the grapefruit-and-cedar effect for the office drawer or the car, the MOJ 30 ml at OMR 3.200 answers it, with the smokier finish noted above. If you already own Bleu and want the next step, L'Exclusif is the house's own answer and the Parfum is the award winner. Stock changes, so the product page is the final word.
